TORONTO ETHNIC SUPERMARKET VAN TOUR
ETHNIC SUPERMARKET TOUR BY VAN
Genova Tours offers an Ethnic Supermarket Tour by van of large markets dedicated to Ethnic taste. These are similar in size to your local supermarket with unique ethnic products. Depending on the day and time most locations have food sampling to add to your enjoyment.
The first destination is the Chinese Supermarket called TNT. This store has racks and racks of goods you won't find at home (unless your home is China), but the real entertainment is the seafood like the geoduck clam. You will see strange fruits such as Durian, dragon fruit, and rambutan. In addition to bok choy, which is now showing up on Canadian tables, you’ll find Daikon, lily root, a wide selection of mushrooms like enoki, and other vegetables like taro, edo and fuzzy melon plus many more.
A special added destination is the Cheese Boutique where prosciutto hangs from the ceiling, truffles are flown in every Wednesday, foie gras sits under lock and key, beef is dry aged 60 days, there are olive oils from 80 different terroirs and jams made from green walnuts, the best artisanal breads of the city, not to mention the chocolate boutique, pastry temptations and daily handpicked produce - but it is for the cheese that one must visit for. This is a place where "best before" dates do not apply. Taking something good and making it great is a constant philosophy of Cheese Boutique. This is Toronto's premier epicurean emporium for foodies and chefs alike.
Next you will visit Starsky a Polish Supermarket that carries not only items for the Polish palate but a huge assortment of Eastern European food products as well. It has walls of perogies, trays of sausages for tasting, and an aisle of loose candy and just about pickled anything. A deli counter serves hot, handmade cabbage rolls and perogies all day.
The fourth destination is Yummy a Russian Supermarket. Although primarily focused on Russian Cuisine it also has Eastern European food from Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, and other countries. It is famous for its cured meats, pickles, baked goods, sweets and dairy products. The market is known for its home-made foods, and locally grown organic products.
The final destination is the Galeria a Korean superstore that carries all the usual Asian grocery basics, enriched with a strong organic selection that includes miso paste and tofu. In addition to traditional Korean snacks and beverages, such as bright green aloe vera drinks, you will be impressed by the selection of foods (you can get jars of kimchi bigger than your head), also prepared bulgogi, tempura, fish cakes, walnut cakes, everything imaginable.
This tour last four hours and utilizes and executive van. Tours occur in either the morning or afternoon. (Alternate markets may be visited.) Genova Tours does not organize or assemble groups to do the tour. A flat fee is charged for one to six people to take the tour.
